The Red Shoes
A new musical by Cheryl Kemeny
Set in London, 1778, The Red Shoes opens on the parlor of the recently orphaned young Celia Worthington. With her parents dead of influenza, Celia is left penniless when her father’s East India ships are reported lost at sea. Her housekeeper, Mrs. Alice Marks, repeatedly chides the insensitive bean-counters while the kindly family solicitor, Merrick Blake Esq. bemoans cruel fate. Just then the doorbell rings. It is a birthday package for Miss Celia from her dead parents—a pair of red ballet shoes and a beautiful costume. A distraught Celia vows never to dance again. The maid, Jinny, tells her that this gift is a sign—dancing will be her salvation. Master Blake’s handsome young clerk, Kenneth Benchley, interrupts. He has found a home for Miss Celia through his aunt, a benefactress of Miss Bellingham’s Asylum for Talented Orphans. And thus begins Celia’s amazing journey in this dancing and singing musical that reflects the time period with a Dickensian feel. The show can also be used as a holiday musical as carols are employed in the script, but can be performed any time during the year. The one requirement is that the lead character be an excellent ballet dancer.
