“Living the American Dream”
The second musical in the historical “Ellis Island Trilogy”– written by Cheryl E. Kemeny. Set in 1907, the story follows the lives of 2 Irish immigrant couples as they struggle to make it in New York City. After a hasty marriage at the Ellis Island “kissing post”, headstrong sister Kate Sullivan forces Colleen to dump their erstwhile new husbands Timothy and Daniel, who then go on to work as dock hands while becoming involved in the prizefighting world of the time. Kate finds a questionable job working for underworld kingpin Doyle Callaghan as a hostess at a New York nightclub, the Ebony Star. Her sister Colleen takes a job as a maid with the wealthy Elsworth family. Narrated by “remittance man” Emmet Farnsworth, the story unfolds against a backdrop of the fight for women’s suffrage and the contrasting lifestyles of the super-rich and New York’s underclass. Tragedy, romance, disappointment and success combine in this musical about the pursuit of the American Dream.
